Free Wills Month

Free Wills Month brings together a group of well-respected charities to offer members of the public aged 55 and over the opportunity to have their simple Wills written or updated free of charge by using participating lawyers in selected locations.

The next Free Wills Month campaigns will be in the Spring of 2023 with the objective of running campaigns in every province across the country. The different legal system in Québec means that our model doesn't work there the same way as elsewhere in Canada, but we are looking at ways to adapt it so that people can access the Free Wills Month program wherever they live.

Please let us know through the Contact page if you would like to be notified as and when plans are formulated for your location.

An up to date Will written by a lawyer ensures your wishes are respected. It also avoids difficult decisions and legal complications for your loved ones. Free Wills Month allows you to provide for family and friends and leave a gift to your chosen charities too. A gift in your Will costs you nothing now but can make a difference for years to come.

Should you like further information about Free Wills Month, or would like to be put on a waiting list for information about the next campaign in your province, please email [email protected] You will receive an acknowledgement and, in due course, updates about future relevant Free Wills Month campaigns.

The charities behind Free Wills Month

An up-to-date Will gives you peace of mind, knowing your affairs are in order. It also helps your closest family at a particularly difficult time for them.

Of course, it’s an opportunity to help some great charities at the same time. Gifts in Wills are vital to charities. Many charities depend on them for up to half their income.

The next campaign begins May 1, 2023.

Please leave your details below and we'll send you a reminder when the campaign starts in your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the campaign work?

Members of the public aged 55 and over contact one of the firms of lawyers taking part in a Free Wills Month campaign during the designated month to request an appointment.

The lawyer will help to draw up a Will that accurately reflects the wishes of the individual or couple. Those taking up the offer are under no obligation to leave a gift to one of the Free Wills Month charities, however, we earnestly hope that many will see this as a chance to help their favourite cause.

Appointments are limited and are allocated on a first come first served basis. Once all available appointments are booked the campaign will close, this may be before the end of the campaigning month.

Who is the campaign open to?

Free Wills Month is intended for individuals or couples aged 55 and over. In the case of couples making ‘mirror’ Wills, it is sufficient that one has reached the age of 55.

Do the charities get a copy of each Will?

No. The only documentation that is sent on to us is the confidential declaration form which asks questions such as where people heard of the campaign, their age and whether or not they have left a gift to one or more of the Free Wills Month charities.

What happens if a Will is complicated?

We have agreed that the campaign will cover the writing of ‘simple’ Wills. If your Will needs some more work, the lawyer may ask you to pay the balance yourself, however, most people only require simple Wills.

I'm a lawyer. How can I get involved?

Please email Stephen Maund at [email protected] or call the Free Wills Month office on 647-351-7342. Free Wills Month campaigns run in most provinces.
